Printworks, Amelia Street

Client: Glenn Howells Architects for First Base
Completed: 2010

Printworks Proposed PlantingThe Printworks is a new mixed use development in Elephant and Castle, London. The development incorporates 164 apartments for private, key worker and social rent tenancies, with workspace for small businesses on the ground floor and an enclosed communal courtyard.

Moore Environment developed the initial design for the external areas, taking the scheme through planning approval and a design and build construction process.

The site was constrained by steep level changes, vehicle access requirements and demanding client needs.

The final scheme incorporates a wide paved delivery and emergency vehicular access area bordering a lawn that slopes down to a low maintenance terraced gravel garden planted with grasses and fragrant herbs.

Printworks Proposed PlantingEspaliered trees form a green wall to the perimeter boundaries and a bicycle store, which has a light-weight sedum and wildflower roof.

A play/activity area utilises the steep gradients and incorporates low key timber ‘trim trail’ equipment, bordered by hardy fragment shrub beds.

Benches line a ramp walkway through the garden and Betula trees provide a vertical balance to the sloping site.

The roof of the new building incorporates a biodiversity roof of variously sized gravel substrates sown with wildflower seeds. Bird and insect boxes have also been installed throughout the site.
