This scheme improve safety on the A66 dual carriageway between Stockton-on-Tees and Darlington at the villages of Long Newton and Elton comprised the construction of a bridge and slip roads allowing local traffic to cross the dual carriageway and to join the main road safely.
The new junction improves access to Durham Tees Valley Airport and also includes a new link road from Long Newton to Elton, improving access for cyclists, pedestrians and local traffic between the villages.
A design and build project, in collaboration with Interserve and Amey, Moore Environment were responsible for producing the landscape design and specification, and coordinating sub-consultant input for archaeology and ecology aspects, as well as overseeing site operations and managing the landscape contract into aftercare.
The scheme incorporates three drainage attenuation ponds, species rich grassland and native woodland planting, together with amenity grass areas and ornamental shrubs bed within the village.
Recognised for having achieved the aims to save lives, improve communities, and enhance the environment and biodiversity in the area, the scheme was awarded the Silver Green Apple Award in 2008 for environmental best practice and received the ‘Highly Commended’ award for Community Benefit at the RICS North East Renaissance awards in 2010.
